Killing mosquito larvae is easier than killing the adults.
That’s why; we try to kill them when they are in their growing stage.
They are very small. One square ft. of water surface can have hundreds to thousands of larvae.
So, now the question arises,
What kills mosquito larvae in the standing water?
The best option to kill larvae is dunks. Check here.
In the below, I’ve shared the information about them, and about the other ways.
How to Get Rid of Mosquito Larvae
These are great for killing these small insects when they are in the development stage, and more specifically, when they’re in the larvae stage.
Basically, dunks are like the small donuts with a hole, so that, you can attach a dunk to prevent it from flowing away.
When we put a dunk into the water, it releases larvicide (Bti, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) and kills the larvae with the bacteria. These dunks are safe for environment & animals, and that’s, this product is labeled for organic gardening.
When using the mosquito dunk, you have to insert it into the standing water, so that, while floating on the surface, it can release the bacteria, and the larvae eat them.
The good thing is that the Bti bacteria are toxic only to the mosquito larvae. It kills them in a short amount of time but doesn’t affect other wildlife.
It doesn’t affect pets and the aquatic animals like frogs, fish, and other wildlife. So, you don’t have to worry about them. It’s 100% pet-friendly.
The active ingredient in the mosquito dunk is Bti, and that’s registered with the EPA. There are no other toxins used in them.
Another thing which we love in the dunks is that they are long-lasting. It kills mosquito larvae within a few hours, and along with that, it ensures that no infestation takes place for 30 days in the certain water container.
With only one dunk, you can treat nearly 100 square ft. of surface water.
These mosquito dunks are good for the ponds, animal water troughs, rain barrels, and wherever, you can find standing water.
Just like dunks, bits are perfect for mosquito larvae killer in standing water and non-toxic to other animals and the environment.
But, now you may be thinking, what’s the difference between them?
The bits are in the little pellet form, and therefore they’re perfect for using in the small areas where standing water accumulates. In those small places, you don’t need to place an entire dunk. In the swampy and muddy areas, dunks are not the best choice because it’ll be difficult for them to spread. In that case, bits works perfectly fine.
With these bits, you can get rid of mosquito larvae within 24 hours.
These bits do not last long, but they impressively kill the larvae. After the killing, you can continue to add bits on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, or you can use dunks for the long term protection.
For every 25 square ft. of standing water, you have to sprinkle one teaspoon of bits. These should be sprinkled uniformly over the surface for the best results.
Now, these Mosquito Bits are EPA registered in all the 50 states of USA.
You should definitely try this because it gives the best result, and it’s cheap.
Home Remedies for Killing Mosquito Larvae
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the chlorine bleach which we use in our laundry, and for the sanitizing the garden tools, can be considered as a pesticide. That’s why people use bleach to kill bed bugs.
Clorox brand or the bleach of other brands are technically pesticides, and they can kill bacteria & fungi, but the bleach should have at least 5.25% sodium hypochlorite in it.
It should be noted that bleach can kill mosquito larvae, fungi, and bacteria, but it can be harmful to the wildlife. Therefore, you should not add bleach to a water source that any animal or birds might drink from.
If you have standing water, then you can kill larvae with bleach by adding nearly 1 tablespoon for every 1 gallon of water.
But, make sure, you use it carefully because it can be dangerous for other animals & birds.
But, along with ants, the cinnamon also works well against the larvae of mosquito.
But, here, you don’t have to use the cinnamon powder. You can use cinnamon oil to get rid of mosquito larvae in the standing water.
For doing that, you need to add nearly 15% cinnamon oil to the 85% of the standing water.
After adding the cinnamon oil, it’ll kill the larvae in nearly 6 hours.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Good thing is that it’s natural & non-toxic. You don’t have to worry about your pet, which may drink that water which you’ve treated.
If you want to use it effectively, then you need to add nearly 15% vinegar to the 85% water. Using a smaller concentration will not be effective. It’ll take nearly 18 hours in the killing.
You can use mineral oil, Neem oil, or vegetable oil as the natural mosquito larvae killer.
But, it should be noted that you should use them only in the small containers where water accumulates, not in the larger water bodies like ponds or lakes because it can adversely affect the fish or the water birds.
You can use ¼ teaspoon of oil per gallon of water.
A small amount of oil on the top of the water can smother mosquito larvae.
Note: Be careful, this can also kill other water bugs. Don’t use oils in the larger water bodies, or in the water bodies which contain fish. It can adversely affect them.
What kills mosquito larvae in the standing water?
Bits, dunks, Oil, Cinnamon, Bleach, & Vinegar are good for the treatment. But, from all of these, I personally recommend mosquito dunks for ponds, and bits for smaller areas. These are not costly, and work great.
What are the preventive measures to avoid mosquito larvae?
- After the rain, dump all the standing water from the places where it accumulates like the tires, buckets etc.
- Sprinkle the mosquito bits in the muddy areas to avoid future larvae infestation.
- Clear the leaves and debris, because these can provide a perfect place for them.
- Use bits & dunks in the ponds, pools, and other places. They won’t harm environment and animals.
When do mosquito eggs hatch?
The eggs hatch into larvae within 24 to 48 hours.
Why mosquitoes drink blood?
The male mosquitoes feed on the plants, while the females drink blood so that they can nourish the eggs.
Mosquitoes spread many kinds of diseases, and therefore, the best thing is that, if you kill them in their initial stage.
From all of these, mosquito dunks & bits are the most effective and work fast. You can use home remedies, but they are not close to these products.
