What Kills Mosquito Larvae in Standing Water & Pond?
One of the best ways to eliminate mosquito population is to kill them when they are still young.
Killing mosquito larvae is easier than killing the adults.
Because these larvae can’t fly to another place when you attack them.
These larvae are very tiny. Even, just one square ft. of water surface can have hundreds to thousands of mosquito larvae.
But, at least, killing these larvae is comparatively easier than killing the adult ones.
Common Places to Find Mosquito Larvae
After a blood meal, a female mosquito lay 100 to 400 eggs, depending on the species. She lays her eggs on the standing water, or near it, or on the damp soil.
Standing water is the perfect place for female mosquitoes to lay her eggs. So, it’s the best place to find the larvae.
If you want to find mosquito larvae in your home, or near it, then you have to look at these three places.
Mosquito Larvae in Pool
If you have a swimming pool in your house or somewhere near your house, then it can be a place where a female mosquito laid her eggs.
As we do not change the water of swimming pool every day, as it is not practical for us or whatever, this becomes a perfect place to live for the mosquito larvae.
These baby pests are very small, and therefore, many times we ignore the presence of mosquito larvae in the swimming pool which results in a massive increase in the population of mosquitoes.
Mosquito Larvae in Ponds
What is a pond?
Everyone knows a pond is a body of standing water, either artificially or naturally.
Ponds are the more secure place for these larvae because, in the swimming pools, people swim, kids play. Means, there is some activity in the pools, but when it comes to ponds, there is very little activity because no one baths in it.
Another thing that makes a pond perfect place for these larvae is, it’s something like permanent. After a few days, we change the water in swimming pools, but no one changes the water of ponds.
If you find mosquito larvae in your pool, then I’m sure you’ll try to get rid of them. But, this doesn’t happen in the case of ponds. They stay undisturbed for weeks, and no one uses any mosquito larvae killer to eliminate them.
Mosquito Larvae in Standing Water
Standing water is the number one source of mosquito infestation in homes.
In the rainy season, water accumulates at the places where it gets unnoticed, and we ignore that.
This results in mosquito infestation in our houses.
As I told you earlier, you can find mosquito larvae in the swimming pools and ponds, but these are not the only places.
In a small place like 1 square feet of standing water, you can find hundreds to thousands of mosquito larvae, and that’s a big number.
In the most of the cases, these standing water places create after rainfall. So, in the rainy season, regularly places where water can accumulate.
Some common small standing water places which can be a perfect place for mosquitoes are:
- Old Tires
- Cans, containers, pots etc
- Drains & Gutters
- Small pits in the garden and yard
- And other similar places that hold water for a long time
How to Kill Mosquito Larvae
If you find out that there are mosquito larvae in a nearby pond, swimming pool, and in other places shared above.
Then, what should you do?
When they’re in the larval stage, it is the best time to kill them because they can’t fly from that place, and with just a few efforts, you’ll be able to kill hundreds of future mosquitoes.
Killing Mosquito Larvae in a Pool
If your swimming pool left unused for a week or two, it can become a favorite place of mosquitoes for breeding and laying eggs.
Now, the question arises, if you have mosquito larvae in swimming pool, and how to kill them?
First of all, you should know that a clean swimming pool will be a lot unattractive to the mosquitoes as compared to dirty pools which stay unused for weeks.
Use of Pool Filters
Swimming pool filter is a great tool for cleaning the water of your pool. There are many types of pool filters available out there that work on different technologies, but their purpose is same, to clean water.
These pool filters remove small dirt & debris from the pool and make it clean. These not only help to fight against mosquito larvae, but a pool filter also makes your pool clean.
If you have a swimming pool, whether you’re facing a mosquito problem or not, a pool filter is a must buy for you.
If you want to buy, then you can find some great pool filters at an affordable price on Amazon.
Use of Household Products
Yes, you can use household products like oil, bleach, but it is not a good idea to use these in your swimming pool.
You will see oil shining on the water surface all over your swimming pool.
Can you swim in that pool?
I guess, no.
So, I’ll suggest you leave home remedies here.
If there is standing water in places like small pits in the yard, standing water in the containers, debris, and in other small areas, then go ahead, use home remedies.
But, as per my opinion, don’t use home remedies in your swimming pool.
In the below, I’ve shared some effective home remedies that you can use in small places where water stands. I recommend you to read that section also.
Use of Mosquito Dunks
The Mosquito Dunks are EPA registered in all the 50 states of United States. The organic BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israelensis) has no toxicity to the people, and it doesn’t pose any risk to the humans. It is also approved for the use of pest control in the organic farming operations.
If there are a lot of mosquito larvae in your pool, then you just have to put one or two mosquito dunk in the pool, and the next day, all the mosquito larvae will be dead.
It is really fast, effective, and safe to use.
Due to this features, it is the best product for killing mosquito larvae.
Mosquito Dunk is also affordable. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars, just a few dollars, and you are good to go.
Another benefit of mosquito dunks is that they stay active for many days, approximately 30 days. So, just put a dunk in your swimming pool, and you don’t have to worry about mosquito larvae infestation in your pool for about a month.
Before purchasing it, I recommend you to take a look at the customer reviews of Summit Mosquito Dunks so that you’ll be 100% sure about your choice.
But, I know, there is nothing better than Summit Mosquito Dunks.
Killing Mosquito Larvae in Ponds
If you have your own pond or there is pond near your house, and if it is infested with mosquito larvae, then you have to do something about it.
In most of the cases, in the summers & rainy season, ponds become the perfect place for the mosquito breeding, because they remain undisturbed for weeks.
Use of Home Remedies
In the below, I’ve shared some great home remedies that work really well in killing mosquito larvae.
But, I’ll not recommend you to use them in the natural ponds.
There are two reasons behind it.
- The home remedies work, but they are for very small areas like standing water in a tank, containers, or in the small pits in the garden. These remedies will not be effective in big places like ponds.
- If you use home remedies then it may be harmful to the aquatic animals. Household products like oils, bleach etc can be very dangerous for small fishes, and other aquatic animals.
Use of Mosquito Bits
You may know that organic mosquito bits and dunks are the same things. The only difference between them is that dunks are in the shape of a doughnut while mosquito bits are small particles that can be spread anywhere, like granules.
In the swimming pools, mosquito dunks are very helpful. You can also use them in the ponds.
But, if there is mud, swampy areas, a lot of grass, then in that case use of mosquito dunks will not be very effective because it’ll be difficult to reach mosquito larvae in different areas. Algae in ponds is a great barrier to reach these larvae.
So, in such ponds, the best thing to use is mosquito bits.
These are same as dunks, but they are in the form of granules.
Wherever you see or suspect mosquito larvae presence spread some mosquito bits. In this way, you’ll be able to get rid of mosquito larvae in ponds without any difficulty.
There are thousands of happy users of these bits and really love it.
You can read the customer reviews of Summit Mosquito Bits on Amazon, and you’ll also get to know about their experience with these bits.
What Kills Mosquito Larvae in Standing Water?
So, now you know how to deal with these larvae in the pools, fountains, and in the ponds.
But, what about standing water in the small places?
In the summer and rainy season, water accumulates in the places like the basement, cans, old tires, containers, gutters, and other similar places.
We don’t use that standing water for any purpose, and neither there are any other living beings in these areas. So, you can try anything.
But, as you know, the most effective solution is Mosquito Bits.
Use of Home Remedies
For treating standing water places, you can use home remedies to get rid of them. Here, I’m sharing a few effective home remedies that’ll be helpful to you.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the chlorine bleach that we use in our laundry, and for the sanitizing the garden tools, can be considered as a pesticide. That’s the reason, why people use bleach to kill bed bugs.
Clorox brand or the bleach of other brands will be considered as a pesticide, and they’ll be able to kill bacteria & fungi if it has at least 5.25% sodium hypochlorite in it.
Bleach is not environment-friendly, but bleach is a good mosquito larvae killer.
It can kill mosquito larvae, but it can be harmful to the wildlife. Therefore, do not use bleach on the water sources which can be drunk by animals or birds. It can be dangerous for animals and birds.
As a pesticide, it is used in 1 to 1 solution of bleach and water to kill mosquito larvae from rain gutters and keep protected from future infestation.
If you’ve ants in your house, then you can sprinkle the cinnamon powder, and the ants won’t come near it.
But, along with ants, the cinnamon also works well against the larvae of mosquito.
In the case of mosquito larvae, you have to use cinnamon oil.
You just have to add nearly 15% of cinnamon oil to the 85% of the standing water.
After adding the cinnamon oil, it’ll kill the mosquito larvae in nearly 6 hours.
Apple Cider Vinegar
There are many benefits of vinegar when it comes to pest control. It is also good in killing larvae of these small creatures.
Good thing is that it’s natural & non-toxic. You don’t have to worry about your pet, which may drink that water which you’ve treated.
If you want to use it effectively, then you need to add nearly 15% vinegar to the 85% water. Using a smaller concentration will not be effective. It’ll take nearly 18 hours in the killing.
You can use mineral oil, Neem oil, or vegetable oil as a natural mosquito larvae killer.
But, do not use oil in the large water bodies like ponds or lakes which are used by many animals and birds for drinking.
Only use oils in the standing water that accumulates in the old tires, small containers, small pits etc.
You can use ¼ teaspoon of oil per gallon of water.
A small amount of oil on the top of the water can smother mosquito larvae.
Note: Be careful, this can also kill other water bugs. Do not use oils in the large water bodies, or in the water bodies which contain fishes or that is used by other animals like lakes, ponds, or fountains. It can adversely affect them.
You can purchase insecticidal soap that is specially designed for the gardeners. But, any soap will work.
Just put some shampoo or dish soap in the standing water. Even, a very tiny layer of soap will kill most of the mosquito larvae in the water.

Summit Mosquito Dunks
Dunks are one of the most effective ways to kill mosquito larvae. These are popular because they’re effective, fast, and easy to use.
These are great for killing these small insects when they are in the development stage, and more specifically, when they’re in the larvae stage.
Basically, dunks are like the small donuts with a hole, so that, you can attach a dunk to prevent it from flowing away.
When we put a dunk into the water, it releases larvicide (Bti, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) and kills the larvae with the bacteria. These dunks are safe for environment & animals, and that’s, this product is labeled for organic gardening.
When using the mosquito dunk, you have to insert it into the standing water, so that, while floating on the surface, it can release the bacteria, and the larvae eat them.
The good thing is that the Bti bacteria are toxic only to the mosquito larvae. It kills them in a short amount of time but doesn’t affect other wildlife.
It doesn’t affect pets and the aquatic animals like frogs, fish, and other wildlife. So, you don’t have to worry about them. It’s 100% pet-friendly.

Another thing which we love in the dunks is that they are long-lasting. It kills mosquito larvae within a few hours, and along with that, it ensures that no infestation takes place for 30 days in the certain water container.
With only one dunk, you can treat nearly 100 square ft. of surface water.
These mosquito dunks are good for the ponds, animal water troughs, rain barrels, and wherever, you can find standing water.

The bits are in the little pellet form, and therefore they’re perfect for use in the small areas where standing water accumulates. In those small places, you don’t need to place an entire dunk. In the swampy and muddy areas, dunks are not the best choice because it’ll be difficult for them to spread. In that case, bits works perfectly fine.

These bits do not last long, but they impressively kill the larvae. After the killing, you can continue to add bits on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, or you can use dunks for the long-term protection.

In the below, I’m sharing a few preventive measures that can be used to avoid any future infestation of these biting insects.
The WHO also shared good information about preventing mosquito breeding sites near your home.
- After the rain, dump all the standing water from the places where it accumulates like in the old tires, buckets, cans, containers, small pits, leaves etc.
- Clear the leaves and debris because they provide a perfect place for their breeding.
- Cover all the things that can hold standing water like tires, broken things etc.
- Clean bird baths after every few days.
- Water collection pans for the plants’ pots can also provide a breeding place for them. Make sure to change them or clean them, as necessary.
- Keep your swimming pool clean. You can also use mosquito dunks to avoid any larvae in it.
- Keep the drains and the rain gutters clean.
- In the rainy season, some of your plants may collect water in between their leaves. So, after rain, make sure to check your garden plants and create a small hole in them. Therefore, they’ll not collect water from the next time.
- Mosquitoes don’t like to lay their eggs in the tall grass, but tall grass provides a good place for their resting & hiding. Keep the grass short.
- Mosquito repelling plants can be very helpful to avoid mosquito breeding. Plant mosquito repelling plants like peppermint, marigold, catnip, rosemary, basil etc near the places where you know mosquitoes can lay eggs.
- Consider keeping mosquito-eating fish in your pond. Mosquito fish, minnows, goldfish and a few others love to feed on mosquito larva.
- Create a fountain or waterfall in your water garden because this will create disturbance in the water, and mosquitoes will not lay eggs in such places. They’ll always prefer standing water.
- If there is a natural pond or muddy areas near your house, then use bits or dunks in such places. These larvicides will work for several days and won’t allow any future infestation.
