If you’ve only noticed one or two ants in a certain area do not step on them or kill them. Follow them instead. You may end up finding many more ants or the nest that they have built inside your home.

What Do Ants Do When it Floods?

When there is a rainstorm or a high risk of flooding, ants will:

  • build rafts
  • hide in intricate tunnel systems
  • find a tree
  • enter your home

Some ants will be able to create a living raft that floats. Ants join up together to create this raft and find safety through floodwaters.

Fire ants are known to do this type of response. They can put thousands of their tight bodies together by holding onto each other’s legs. This raft will help them float away on the water to find somewhere dry.

The raft can reach your home or a tree and any other dry object to allow the answers to escape from pooling waters and floods.

Do Ants Get Worse When it Rains?

Yes. Ants can invade your home in higher numbers when there is rain outside. If there are recent rains near your home, the soil can become less saturated.

Ants can return to their nests or create new ones inside your home. Ants shuttle around in large numbers to find shelter when it rains. If they have not built intricate tunnels underneath the ground,  then your home becomes the second best solution for them to hide.

Once they realize that your home is a location with ample supplies of food sources, they may never wish to leave. They may create a nest near the pantry of your home or even in the bathroom. Ants can detect sugars are other food sources in liquids, solids and even your own urine.

How Do I Get Rid Of Ants In My Home After A Storm?

Once you have an invasion of ants after a storm, it is up to you to remove the colony altogether. You may not find their nest but that is okay. Do not try to kill ants directly with a chemical spray.

Bait traps work much better because worker ants will take it back to their colony and feed it to their queen. If the queen dies,  then you have eradicated the Colony within a short amount of time.

If ants continue to come back,  then you may have to check your building’s structure for any gaps or openings. You can work with a contractor or exterminator to eliminate any openings cracks, crevices or gaps where they enter your home without you noticing.

How Do I Prevent Ants In My Home After Rain?

Prevention is the best method of keeping ants away from your home. Do not allow ants to enter your home when it rains.

  • Check the perimeter around your home.
  • Make sure all windows and door frames do not contain any cracks or crevices.
  • Fill them with caulk or silicone.
  • Patch all foundations where there are any cracks present.
  • Remove any types of vegetation or plant matter that is alive or decaying that is touching the perimeter of your home.
  • Remove all trash, leaves, grass cuttings and wood debris around your yard.
  • Keep all these items at least fifteen to twenty feet away from the exterior of your home.
  • It will not only prevent ants but other pests such as termites.

Ants will work like crazy on rainy days to find solutions to remain dry. Do not allow your home to be an option.
